Houston Podcast Offers Real Help for Pet Owners

Let’s face it: vet care is expensive, online advice is all over the place, and pet problems never show up at convenient times. For many Houston pet parents, the hardest part isn’t loving their pets; it’s feeling stuck with behavior problems that won’t quit, sky-high pet costs, or that awful moment when it feels like life might be easier without pets.

That’s why The Pet Parent Hotline pet podcast was created: to give pet parents practical help before stress turns into thoughts of rehoming.

About The Pet Parent Hotline

The Pet Parent Hotline is a Houston-area pet podcast hosted by Amy Castro, president of Starlight Outreach and Rescue. The show began in 2023 and grew directly from the daily pleas Amy receives from pet parents seeking a rescue to take in their pets.

“Every day I answer calls from pet parents looking to surrender their pets because they feel they’re out of options,” she said. “It would be easy to say yes, we can take your pet, or no, we can’t. But my first question is always, ‘What’s going on with your pet that makes you feel you need to give them up?’”

What follows is usually a conversation focused on troubleshooting and exploring solutions, one that often ends with pet parents deciding to give it another try.

“These calls made me realize I could help a few people on the phone each week, or reach thousands with a podcast and hopefully catch them before they were at a breaking point or ready to give up on their pet,” she said.

What Pet Parents Can Learn by Listening

The Pet Parent Hotline isn’t about being a perfect pet parent. It’s about making better decisions, especially when money, time, or stress is high.

Episodes cover practical topics like:

  • Vet visits, second opinions, and how to make decisions when money is tight
  • Behavior and training issues, and when it’s time to get help
  • How to sort good advice from bad advice and what questions to ask
  • Routines and small changes that make life calmer
  • Real-life troubleshooting to keep pets and households balanced

The tone stays solution-focused and realistic because most pet parents are already trying their best; they just need more practical guidance.

Local Experts, Real Conversations

Whenever possible, the show features Houston-area pet professionals, including veterinarians,
trainers, groomers, and specialists, keeping the advice grounded and relevant.

For example, during Pet Dental Health Month in February, an episode featured Dr. Chanda Miles of
Veterinary Dentistry Specialists in Katy, one of only about 250 veterinary dentists worldwide.
The episode explains why routine dental care matters and offers simple ways for people to save
money while protecting their pets’ health.

Several past episodes have also featured Dr. Arezue Shokrollahi (“Dr. Zoo”) of Family Animal
Hospital of Friendswood
, covering topics like saving money at the vet, choosing between
boarding and a pet sitter
, holiday hazards for pets, and more.
